Home School Your Way To Success

So now most parents are realizing that they appreciate their kid’s teacher now more than ever.  Here is what I’ve found out  from being a home school parent. Disclaimer- I have been a home school parent even before they shut down the school because of the Corona Virus.

Stay on task:  Yes, it not easy in the beginning to make sure that all assignments are completed and that your kids are doing school.  Trust me, when you start to get behind, you get really behind.  One assignment can quickly add up to five or six overdue assignments in one class.  Then you look at how many classes your student has and wham you feel overwhelmed.  I know that you might be upset because your routine it out of whack, but think about how your kids feel.  They are now “stuck” with you all day teaching them stuff that let’s face it we can’t remember.

Walk away: Every once in a while you might just have to walk away and let your kids be upset.  In the beginning I would try to tough it out and make my kids stay in their seats and learn.  When I walked away to take a moment it dawned on me that maybe they don’t like sitting still in the house, maybe it’s time for them to find their best learning zone to get them to learn.  This helped massively.  Giving my kids space and letting them have their own learning environment saved a lot of yelling and tears.

Make it fun:  If you don’t understand the subject being taught try Khan academy.  It not only teaches my kids, but often times it teaches me something new.  Then to make it fun, we find cool videos that relate to history or science that can cover the topic more in-depth.  Face it, if I don’t know it, I find someone online that does.  Let the 21st century work for you!  I am always letting my kids watch educational videos or shows that make the learning experience seem fun and enjoyable.

Lastly, breath!  You will make it.  I promise.  I couldn’t wait for my kids to start school again and then guess what, I decided that homeschooling wasn’t that bad after all.  It actually gave me more flexibility once we got over the learning curve.  You got this, I promise.  Just take it day by day and you will beginning to have a new routine and who knows maybe you might try homeschooling next year as well.
